Massive MIMO, maximizing performance with advanced technologies
Mobile traffic demand is growing at an explosive rate, and 5G networks need to support high capacity and end user throughput. Despite this hike in traffic, major global 5G frequency bands are located in the mid-band TDD spectrum with increased path loss and limited coverage. Then traditional 4G spectrum and new 5G systems must be able to compensate such loss with coverage enhancement techniques. Massive multi-input Multi-output or massive Mimo is a breakthrough technology that improves 5G capacity and user experience. Legacy cellular equipment usually have a passive antenna system that send data within its coverage area. On the contrary, an active antenna system consisting of multiple antenna elements is able to concentrate signals into narrow beams with higher gain. In addition, it can adjust and control the shape and direction of the beams to concentrate them to specific users. An active antenna system with multiple RF chains, or massive Mimo, brings a high degree of freedom in beam width, beam gain, and beam direction for significant improvements in coverage and throughput.
Thus, massive Mimo radios are a key solution for 5G deployment. In an ideal and simplified cell layout, a cell shape is often expressed as a circle or hexagon. However, cell coverage in the real world takes various and irregular shapes depending on the surrounding geographical features, distribution of buildings and obstacles, and the unpredictable distribution of traffic, demand and subscribers. A massive Mimo radio is able to change its coverage shape with multiple narrow beams and create coverage that best fits the cell’s unique layout. A massive Mimo radio is able to generate multiple beams, which do not interfere with each other by distributing the beams to different users. The massive Mimo radio can communicate with multiple users with the same time and frequency resources to increase spectral efficiency and capacity.
This in turn improves overall user experience in a network. 5G Fixed Wireless Access: A solution for digital divide

How it performance with advanced technologies.Continuously advancing connections and telecommunications have become catalysts for digitalization, and the demand for diverse new digital services is accelerating every day. Daily activities including work, healthcare, school and entertainment are now accessible remotely and have become an essential part of our everyday lives. However, there still exists many regions that are unable to enjoy the benefits of this new service paradigm, as they are lacking in network infrastructure that will provide the connectivity to such services. The digital divide refers to this disparity in digital access between regions. This digital divide is more prominent in rural areas due to low population density and the cost of bringing coverage to hard to reach areas. How can the digital divide be resolved? While there are many approaches to provide connectivity, fixed wireless access or FWA, is both an efficient and high performance solution. FWA refers to substituting the last mile cable and fiber with a wireless alternative. FWA is much easier to deploy than fiber to the home, taking less time and also requiring less investment as it minimizes the last mile infrastructure and its construction than compared to traditional fiber. FWA has made a huge leap in terms of its performance with the rise of 5G technology. FWA is not new, but previous telecommunication generations have lacked the performance necessary to make it a viable alternative to wired services. 5G FWA delivers ten times the capacity of a 4G FWA network with more reliability, and can provide a true broadband experience with mobile technology. Bridging the digital divide will ultimately enable underprivileged regions to fully enjoy the benefits of broadband access.
Delivering the promises of 5G with Samsung’s Baseband
Samsung’s 5G baseband is designed for massive, complex network rollouts as both a backward compatible and future proof solution. And depending on deployment conditions, operators may choose from different types of base bands. Samsung’s base band supports both LTE and 5G within the same hardware, so that operators can progressively evolve their infrastructure when migrating from LTE to 5G. For instance, operators may choose to initially deploy a single 5G channel card to save CapEx and gradually add up to three channel cards to increase cell capacity. Its high security capabilities have also been proven, as it is the first product in North America to be certified by Common Criteria against the Nd-cp. For optimal deployment options, we are expanding our base band lineup to include base band light. As the name suggests, it is a light and simple base band solution with a one Ew form factor that fits easily in small cabinet spaces. Furthermore, by utilizing our new modem SoC the cell capacity of our base band will double, while power consumption will be cut by half to reduce operator opex as well as conserve energy.
